Must have a basic Mechanical Technician background with experience of operating a batch reacting sewage treatment plant. Must be able to interpret the daily test results of the plant and recognize change of conditions which may occur. Must be able to carry out basic plant room operator duties in the absence of the plant operators.
The Water Treatment Plant Operator has a physically strenuous and demanding job. The Operator will be lifting, pulling and managing equipment and objects. The Operator will have to work in all weather, and must be prepared for both extreme heat and cold. As the Operator is handling potentially dangerous materials he must ensure that all activities are completed in a safe and efficient way to eliminate the possibility of contamination and infection of themselves or others. He will be assigned to operate, monitor, maintain, and trouble-shoot the wastewater treatment facility and its processes. Work involves responsibility for the technical aspects of plant operations, compliance with International and local standards operating regulations, and underground sewer system. Work is performed with considerable independence under the direction of the Mechanical Supervisor, subject to review through reports and results achieved.
The Technician must perform all aspects of sampling, monitoring and testing required to maintain compliance with International and Local regulations governing the wastewater treatment process, and storm water and sludge management. He must assist with the installation and inspection of new sewer lines and services. He must be able to perform the installation, maintenance and repair of the physical plant and pump stations and all of their components.

Maintain the treatment plant systems
Maintain and operate the filtering and chemical treatment processes
Inspect, service and repair components of the sewage treatment plant including water intakes, pipes, water storage vessels, chemical treatment equipment, controls, circulation pumps, valves, etc.
Prepare work orders for servicing and repairs
Arrange for major repairs
Inspect the sewage treatment plant systems on a daily basis to ensure effective operations
Any duties assigned to him
The incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas: water and sanitation systems management, water sampling and testing techniques, inspection procedures, basic knowledge of mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems, water and sewer distribution and collection systems including pipes, water mains, manholes, hydrants, etc. He must be able to demonstrate the complete process of the sewage treatment with all the parameters and the chemicals required for the proper operation of the plant with all tests required to be carried out. He must be able to demonstrate the same and draw a block diagram of the whole process.
